Tonnara di Favignana: Discover it from the Sea with a Kayak Excursion

It is not just a historic building to be observed from the ground. The Tonnara of Favignana reveals its true charm when you discover it from the perspective of the sea, paddling along its ancient structures, surrounded by the crystal clear water of the Mediterranean.
Welcome to the guide that will change the way you see this extraordinary historical attraction. If you are planning a visit and don't know yet what to do in Favignana, find out how to experience tuna fishing in the most authentic way: not as a hurried tourist, but as an explorer of the sea.
We of Egadi Kayak we do exactly that. For years, we have been guiding small groups of visitors to discover the tuna fishery from the sea, during our north side kayak excursion, an adventure that combines history, breathtaking landscapes and the magic of the Mediterranean.
What is the Tonnara of Favignana?
La Tonnara of Favignana is an ancient fishing structure dating back to the 16th century, one of the most significant sites of the Egadi Islands' cultural and historical heritage. It is not simply a building: it is living testimony to centuries of tradition, human ingenuity and deep connection to the Mediterranean Sea.
A tonnara is a traditional and sophisticated bluefin tuna fishing facility. It represented the economic and social heart of Favignana for generations. The term βtonnaraβ itself evokes the hard work of the fishermen, the technical mastery and the thousand-year cycle of fishing in the Mediterranean.
La Tonnara of Favignana is particularly important because it is linked to the Florio family, one of Sicily's most powerful commercial dynasties. Under their management, the tonnara became a center of excellence, exporting tuna throughout Europe and representing the economic power of Sicily.
Today, the tuna fishery represents a fundamental cultural heritage, but its true meaning emerges only when you understand it in the context of the sea, the landscape, and the adventure it represents.
Where to Find the Tonnara of Favignana

The Fascinating History of the Tonnara of Favignana
Origins and Historical Significance
The history of the Tonnara of Favignana is the very history of Favignana and the medieval and modern Mediterranean. It dates back to the 16th century, at a time when bluefin tuna fishing was one of Sicily's most strategic economic activities.
Bluefin tuna is an extraordinary fish: it reaches enormous size, has valuable meat, and represents enormous commercial value. But it is not easy to catch. It requires technique, knowledge of the sea, perfect coordination. This is where the tuna trap comes in.
The Florio Family: The Artisans of Power
La Tonnara of Favignana gained its greatest importance under the management of the family Florio, one of the most powerful commercial dynasties in the Mediterranean. The Florios were not mere owners: they were visionaries who transformed the tuna fishery into a sophisticated enterprise.
They introduced technical innovations, advanced preservation methods, and created a trade network that exported bluefin tuna throughout Europe. Under the Florios, the tuna fishery of Favignana became a symbol of Sicilian economic power, a well-known attraction even in international markets.
The Florio family represented the perfect marriage of tradition and innovation: they respected the age-old techniques of fishing while adapting them to a modern commercial vision.
The Apogee and the Decline
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Tonnara of Favignana was at the height of its power. Dozens of workers, master fishermen of extraordinary experience, sophisticated processing facilities. It was a truly impressive work of engineering, organization and technical knowledge.
With the decline of traditional fishing and the advent of more modern industrial methods in the 20th century, the tuna fishery gradually lost economic importance. But it has gained something more valuable: historical and cultural importance.
From Production Center to Cultural Heritage
In recent decades, the Tonnara of Favignana has been restored and transformed into a museum and cultural space. Today it attracts visitors from all over the world fascinated by the history, culture and heritage of Sicily.
But the real meaning of the tuna fishery emerges when you observe it from the sea, from the waters that have nurtured this extraordinary enterprise for centuries. It is from there that you will truly understand what it meant to live in relationship with the sea.
