Trekking Favignana
Favignana is the largest of the Egadi Islands, off the coast of western Sicily. Nestled between Trapani and the wide Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area, the butterfly-shaped island offers spectacular sea views and wild nature. Even at the height of summer, it is possible to venture out trekking Favignana along limestone hills covered in Mediterranean scrub: the turquoise colors of the sea, the salt-laden wind and the scents of thyme and mastic trees will gladden the eyes.
Each Favignana walking route is a dive into local history: it often starts at the historic Florio tuna fishery or the village and climbs toward the old Saracen fort of St. Catherine, where the view sweeps over the entire archipelago. Among coastal paths and maritime pines, the ancient call of the sea can be felt.
With one eye on fishing traditions and the other on adventure, trekking Favignana reveals an island to explore. Such is the passion for nature that Favignana trekking and a guided kayak excursion among places untouched by mass tourism become tools for discovering the real Favignana.

Mount St. Catherine Panoramic Trail
The scenic trail of Mount St. Catherine (692a - Mount St. Catherine Variant) is the classic Favignana trekking route. From here you overlook the town and the sea, with breathtaking views of the Egadi archipelago. You start from the village or the tuna fishery and climb along a dirt road that meanders in the sunshine, past prickly pears and centuries-old olive trees. After about two kilometers you reach a fork in the road: climb the steep stone steps and you'll reach Forte Saraceno at the top of the mountain in about 40 minutes.
The feelings of the route
Along the way, the wind cools and eases fatigue, and the bitter scent of Mediterranean rosemary and oregano bushes mingles with the salty air. Underfoot, the dusty white earth reflects the bright light, while the surrounding landscape alternates between groves of pine trees and vast blooms of capers and field daisies. From the summit of the fort, though partly ruined, a 360-degree view opens up: on the right Levanzo, opposite Marettimo, and below the island's cultivated fields and ancient tuff quarries.
The Favignana nautical kayak trek - the special recommended route
The most exciting route is the nautical kayak trek, a special experience that combines sea and land. Even without experience you can explore the southern coast with stops at secret coves. Accompanied by local Egadi Kayak guides, in small groups, you paddle close to cliffs admiring caves and coves that can only be reached by sea. This Favignana nautical trek is suitable for everyone: a short introductory course in kayak use is provided before departure, and the tour always takes place in complete safety.
Guided kayak tours: itineraries
Egadi Kayak's kayak excursions depart mainly from Long Peak, on the southern side of the island, ideal for exploring Favignana's most sheltered and natural area. From here you can reach places such as. Cala Rotonda, and on longer hikes you can go as far as Thin Tip, where the lighthouse marks the western end of the island.
On southeast side, quieter outings go as far as Lido Burrone, along stretches of coastline characterized by shallow water and clear sand.
On calm sea days we also organize Special hikes on the north and northwest sides, departing from the Praia beach (near the harbor), to explore wilder areas such as Trapanese Cove and the Faraglioni Beach.
Another variation, again departing from Praia, involves sailing to northeast to Cala Rossa, a spectacular route because of the transparency of the water and the turquoise hues that change with daylight.

Where it is located and how to organize a hike in Favignana
Favignana is located in the Mediterranean Sea, a few kilometers from the western coast of Sicily (Trapani). It can be reached in about 20 minutes by hydrofoil or ferry from the port of Trapani or Marsala (see schedule). Once landed, you can freely follow the trails, and access is public and free. To find your way around the island, it is useful to obtain a map (map of Favignana) Or use an offline navigation app.
Before leaving, check the wind forecast: the north side is more sheltered by the libeccio, sirocco while the south coast is windy with sirocco. Plan the route taking into account weather conditions and sun exposure.
What to expect while trekking in Favignana: views, nature, landscape
During the trek you will feel immersed in the scents of the Mediterranean maquis: rosemary, wild fennel and oregano color the paths, while caper flowers dot the cliffs in white and yellow. The limestone soil, often dusty, reflects the sun's rays, creating bright contrasts with the dark green of the shrubs. The views alternate between views of the blue sea and glimpses of the countryside: in the groves, the echo of cicadas mingles with the rustle of pines and the water lapping against the shores. At altitude, the island is drawn under the immense sky: from Mount Santa Caterina, for example, you can see the clear water around Cala Rossa and the outlines of Levanzo and Marettimo. In short, during the Favignana trek every sense is involved: the view from the headlands, the salty taste of the sea breeze, the smell of the dry earth and the relaxing quiet of the trails.
Practical advice: clothing, best time, safety
To tackle the Favignana trek you need to prepare carefully: you need sturdy hiking shoes that provide grip on the rocky trails. Wear light but opaque clothing, with sunscreen, hat and goggles, because shade is scarce. Carry at least 2 liters of water per person: the island is hot and there are no refreshment stations. An energy snack such as dried fruit or bars may be helpful.
The right period
In spring and early fall, hiking Favignana gives perfect days, with mild temperatures and clear sunsets. June can also be fine, avoiding the middle hours. If you come in midsummer, plan hikes at dawn or dusk to avoid direct sun. Remember that there is not full phone coverage on the trails: it is advisable to communicate your itinerary and return time. It is not necessary to make reservations or obtain permits to hike, but it is a good idea to report to residents or an organized tour guide.
