Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey in Favignana: Location, Filming and How to Visit [2026].

The Odyssey Favignana, an unprecedented event, in March 2025, one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean experienced the arrival of Hollywood. Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer's Oscar-winning director, chose. Favignana as one of the main locations for The Odyssey, his highly anticipated film adaptation of Homer's poem.

For eight weeks, the Egadi island was transformed into a giant open-air set, with a crew of more than 500 people, twelve scenic ships in the harbor, and some of Hollywood's biggest actors walking the same streets as local fishermen. Cala Rotonda, the solotto of Preveto e the Sea Ox became the settings for a $250 million budget film, the first in the history of cinema shot entirely with IMAX cameras.

But why Favignana in particular? And most importantly, is it possible to visit today the locations where the scenes were filmed? In this comprehensive guide you will find out all about The Odyssey in Favignana: from confirmed locations to filming history to how to explore these locations with our kayak excursions, navigating the same waters immortalized by Christopher Nolan.

Why Christopher Nolan Chose Favignana for The Odyssey.

The choice of Favignana was not accidental. Behind the British director's decision are reasons that mix ancient mythology, geography, and cinematic necessity.

The Mythological Link: Favignana in Homer's Odyssey

Favignana has a deep and ancient connection with theโ€™Odyssey of Homer. According to a theory formulated by the English scholar Samuel Butler In the 19th century, the island corresponds to theโ€™โ€œGoat Islandโ€ (in ancient Greek Aegusa) where Odysseus and his companions disembarked to stock up on food during their long journey back to Ithaca.

In Book IX of the Odyssey, Homer writes:

โ€œThen we landed on Goat Island, where we roasted the goats and stocked up on food before facing the Cyclops.โ€

Butler argued that many places described in the Odyssey do not correspond to the geography of Greece, but rather to the Western Sicily and to the Aegadian Islands. According to this interpretation:

  • Favignana = The Island of Goats
  • Marettimo = Ithaca (the homeland of Odysseus)
  • Trapani = Scheria (the city of the Phaeacians)
  • Mount Erice = The Cave of Polyphemus

This theory, however debated, has always fascinated scholars and mythology enthusiasts. And it probably played a role in Christopher Nolan's decision to set part of his film here.

Goat Island: The Theory of Samuel Butler

Butler's hypothesis is based not only on intuition, but on precise geographical analogies. In his essay The Authoress of the Odyssey (The author of the Odyssey), the scholar noted that:

  1. Homeric descriptions Of the places visited by Odysseus correspond better to Sicily than to Greece
  2. The historical presence of goats in Favignana (hence the Greek name Aegusa)
  3. The strategic location Of the island as a natural stop for those circumnavigating Sicily
  4. Geological formations (tuff quarries, caves) reminiscent of scenarios described in the poem

Whether the theory is true or not, the link between Favignana and the Odyssey is part of the island's cultural imagination. And that made it a perfect choice for Nolan.

Authentic Landscapes for IMAX Cinema.

In addition to mythology, Favignana offers something that few other places in the world can guarantee: unspoiled natural landscapes perfect for filming with the new IMAX cameras.

Features that convinced Nolan include:

  • Wild and varied coasts: tuff cliffs, hidden coves, sea caves
  • Crystal clear waters: exceptional underwater visibility for underwater filming
  • Absence of modern construction: many areas of the coast are completely natural
  • Mediterranean light: light quality in spring is ideal for cinema
  • Controlled accessibility: a small island where it is easy to manage production logistics

The Odyssey is the first film in history shot entirely in IMAX 70mm, a format that calls for landscapes of extraordinary visual beauty. Favignana passed the selection along with other international locations such as Morocco, Greece, Scotland and Iceland.

The Shooting of The Odyssey in Favignana: Dates and Timeline

The arrival of a Hollywood production of this magnitude marked a historic moment for Favignana. Here is how the filming took place.

March-April 2025: Two Months of Hollywood in Sicily

The filming of The Odyssey in Favignana took place over a period of eight consecutive weeks, between March and April 2025.

Precise timeline:

  • February 2025: Arrival of the workers, setting up the sets
  • March 2025: Beginning of principal photography
  • April 2025: Filming completion, set dismantling
  • Late April: The crew moves to the Aeolian Islands.

During this period, the island underwent a radical transformation. Many areas normally accessible to the public were temporarily closed, including Il Preveto, Cala Rotondaย (completely interdicted), theย St. Catherine's Castle, and theโ€™Former Tonnara Florio.

The hotels and bed & breakfasts were sold out months before the crew arrived, with rates in some cases tripling. Many residents rented out their homes to members of the production, while restaurants and stores experienced an unprecedented boom in business for an off-season.

The 500 Person Troupe and the Island Invasion

Over 500 people worked on the production of The Odyssey Favignana. The crew included:

  • Main cast: Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson
  • Technical crew: cinematographer, IMAX operators, sound technicians
  • Workers: set designers, costume designers, makeup artists, production assistants
  • Local extras: dozens of Favignana and Trapani residents selected for secondary roles
  • Logistics support: security, catering, transportation, coordination

To handle this โ€œinvasion,โ€ the production (curated in Italy by Wildside, a Fremantle Group company) has fielded an impressive organizational machine:

  • Yellow Nautilus: the iconic yellow Land Rover Discovery that carried cast and crew
  • Private helicopter: always hovering over the island for quick transfers
  • Fleet of dinghies: for travel by sea to coastal locations.
  • Film cranes: on barges in the harbor for marine filming
  • Generators and lights: power supply for the huge IMAX lamps

English became, for a few weeks, the most spoken language after Sicilian on the streets of Favignana.

The Cast in Favignana: Sightings and Testimonies

Although the set was armored, there was no shortage of sightings of Hollywood stars.

Christopher Nolan, Robert Pattinson e Anne Hathaway Were seen several times dining at the restaurant Camparia (the former shipyard turned beach bar in front of the Tonnara Florio). According to witnesses, the director was always accompanied by a small notebook where he took notes even during meals.

Zendaya was photographed walking through the center of Favignana, stopping at some local stores and taking selfies with incredulous fans. Despite her planetary fame (she is the star of Dune and of the series Euphoria), the actress was extremely helpful and friendly to the residents.

Matt Damon e Tom Holland have been more secretive, but some local fishermen tell of seeing them at the harbor early in the morning, observing the operations to prepare the scenic ships.

One anecdote circulated among islanders: during a break in filming, Matt Damon allegedly asked a local fisherman to teach him some words in Sicilian, to โ€œget into the spirit of the place.โ€ The fisherman, who had no idea who he was, allegedly answered him: โ€œTu parla l'inglisi bbuonu. Piโ€™ ccร  chissu basta!โ€ (You speak good English. Here that's enough!).

The Odyssey's Locations in Favignana: Where the Scenes Were Shot.

During the spring of 2025, Christopher Nolan and his crew of more than 500 people transformed Favignana into an open-air film set.

Filming focused on some of the island's most spectacular areas, selected for their natural beauty and connection to the Ulysses myth.

Cala Rotonda: Heart of the Maritime Shooting

Cala Rotonda was one of the main locations in the film, used for maritime scenes and as an access point by sea.

During the weeks of production (March-April 2025), the entire area was interdicted to the public, with the crew setting up sets, equipment and operating bases along the coast. The protected waters and strategic location made Cala Rotonda ideal for the complex sea shots required by the film.

The normally quiet and uncrowded bay has turned into an operational hub with:

  • Dinghies and inflatables for fast transportation
  • Temporary pontoons For equipment docking
  • Tents and gazebos To shelter from the sun between takes.
  • Catering areas For the crew's meals

Cala Rotonda can be reached either by sea, kayak or boat, or via a path from the main road. This relative inaccessibility made it perfect for maintaining set privacy while minimizing the presence of onlookers.

Preveto: The Secret Isle of Film

L'islet of Preveto, one of Favignana's hidden gems, was used as a location for some scenes in the film.

Reachable only by sea, Preveto offers a wild and unspoiled landscape that proved perfect for recreating the atmosphere of Odysseusโ€œ mythological journey. The islet, small in size but with a fascinating morphology (jagged rocks, small coves, Mediterranean vegetation), represents exactly the kind of โ€unknown land" that Odysseus might have encountered in his wanderings.

During our excursions along the south coast, Preveto is one of the stages where we stop for snorkeling and relaxation, allowing you to discover the same place immortalized in Nolan's film. The crystal clear water around the islet is perfect for observing the seabed rich in marine life, including colorful fish, sea urchins and oceanic posidonia.

Former Tonnara Florio: The Production Headquarters

L'Former Florio Plant (Favignana's historic tuna fishery) has been turned into the main production depot.

During the eight weeks of filming, the Tonnara hosted:

โœ“ Costumes and props from the film: hundreds of period costumes, scenic weapons, props
โœ“ IMAX technical equipment: the very heavy 70mm chambers and their accessories.
โœ“ Base of operations for workers: temporary offices, meeting rooms, hair and makeup areas
โœ“ Reserved areas for cast and crew: private spaces for actors and director

The complex has been completely off-limits during the production, with private security manning all access 24 hours a day. Regular visitors to the Tuna Museum were also denied access throughout the filming period.

The choice of the Tonnara Florio is not only logistical. It is one of Sicily's most important industrial monuments, a place that tells centuries of seafaring history related to tuna fishing. Its impressive architecture and connection to the sea made it perfect as a โ€œhome baseโ€ for a film about the Odyssey.

History of the Tonnara of Favignana and Florio Establishment

St. Catherine's Castle: Panoramic Fortress

The St. Catherine's Castle, overlooking Favignana from the highest point on the island (314 meters above sea level), was used for panoramic scenes and probably as a location for โ€œepicโ€ sequences that required views from above.

During filming, access to the castle was blocked to the public, with the surrounding area fenced off and manned by the production. Temporary structures (tents, gazebos, containers) were set up near the fortress, visible even from a distance.

The Castle's strategic location offers spectacular views over the entire Egadi archipelago, the Trapani coast, and even Marettimo on clear days. This makes it perfect for:

  • Aerial shooting with drones: 360ยฐ panoramic views of the island
  • Overall scenes: to show the geography of the place
  • โ€œFittingโ€ sequencesโ€: to give a sense of geographical orientation in storytelling

The Castle, built in Norman times and later expanded, also has a strong symbolic value. It represents the โ€œpoint of observation,โ€ the place from which one scans the horizon waiting for returning ships. A theme perfectly in line with the Odyssey, where Penelope waits for twenty years for the return of Odysseus.

Fishing Harbor: The Ships of Ulysses

The fishing port of Favignana has been transformed into an ancient Greek port, with over 12 scenic ships moorings for several weeks.

The boats, described by local witnesses as โ€œmore Viking than Greek.โ€ (probably an artistic compromise by Nolan to make them more cinematic), were joined by:

โœ“ Film cranes on barges: for top-down filming of ships
โœ“ Dinghies high-tech: inflatable boats with marine filming equipment
โœ“ Equipment for action scenes: probably naval battles or storms

The harbor became one of the most photographed sights during the production. The scenic ships, with their huge sails and artificially โ€œagedโ€ wooden hulls, contrasted surrealistically with the colorful fishing boats and modern boats moored alongside.

Some local fishermen were hired as technical advisors, to teach the cast and crew how to maneuver rowing and sailing boats. A detail that confirms Nolan's manic attention to realism, even when it comes to fantasy films.

Other Possible Locations in Favignana

Several news sources have mentioned other locations on the island as possible sets for the film, although there is no direct confirmation from filming:

Cala Rossa: Favignana's most iconic beach, with its dramatic red cliffs and ancient tuff quarries, has been mentioned by many media (Sky TG24, Trapani Oggi, Italy for Movies) as a film location. Its scenic beauty is unquestionable: the red tufa walls overlooking the turquoise sea create a powerful color contrast, perfect for film. The link to myth is strong: the man-made quarries look like natural amphitheaters, settings that could easily represent ancient or mysterious lands. However, there are no direct records of filming in Cala Rossa during the production period.

Sea Ox Cave: The ancient tuff quarry transformed into a sea cave, with its deep waters and vertical rock walls, may have been used for scenes that required mysterious or dark settings. Some speculate that it may have served as a backdrop for encounters with mythological creatures (such as the Cyclops Polyphemus or the sorceress Circe), given the dark and primordial atmosphere of the place. The cave is accessible both by sea and by land (via an impassable path), which would make it technically feasible for a film production.

Cala Azzurra: With its turquoise waters and the perfect Mediterranean landscape (white sand, rocks, vegetation), was mentioned along with Cala Rossa among possible locations. Cala Azzurra represents the โ€œgentleโ€ side of Favignana, ideal for quieter or more romantic scenes (perhaps related to the island of Calypso or the Phaeacians?).

However, it is important to note that shooting confirmed have focused mainly on Round Cove, Preveto and the harbor areas, with the Former Tonnara Florio as the logistical base. The other locations, although fascinating and mentioned by various sources, remain in the realm of speculation.

Other Sicilian Locations of The Odyssey

In addition to Favignana, the film was also shot in other Sicilian locations:

Aeolian Islands (Lipari, Basiluzzo, Pietra del Bagno)
๐Ÿ“… Dates: April 22 - May 15, 2025
๐ŸŽฌ Scenes: Island of the Sirens, one of the most iconic episodes of the Odyssey

Filming in the Aeolian Islands required special permission from the Region of Sicily, as Pietra del Bagno and Basiluzzo are protected areas of great environmental value. The regional specialized technical commission evaluated the environmental impact before giving the go-ahead.

The Aeolian Islands, with their volcanic landscapes and deep waters, represent a very different context from Favignana. Nolan's choice to use two different Sicilian archipelagos demonstrates the focus on creating visual variety in the film, preventing all the โ€œislandsโ€ of Ulysses' journey from looking the same.

Ostia (Tourist Port of Rome)
๐Ÿ“… Dates: August 4-8, 2025
๐ŸŽฌ Scenes: Probably additional or connecting port scenes.

The brief stop in Ostia, after months of shooting in Sicily, suggests secondary scenes or โ€œpickupsโ€ (additional footage to complete sequences already shot elsewhere).

The Cast of The Odyssey: Who's Acting in the Movie

The Odyssey boasts one of the most stellar casts of 2026, with Oscar-winning actors, pop culture icons, and up-and-coming faces.

Matt Damon is Odysseus/Ulysses

Matt Damon plays the absolute protagonist: Odysseus (Ulysses for the Latins), the king of Ithaca known for his cunning and intelligence.

This is the third collaboration between Damon and Christopher Nolan, after supporting roles in Interstellar (2014) e Oppenheimer (2023). In The Odyssey, however, Damon finally has the starring role in a Nolan film, an achievement the actor had been chasing for years.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Damon stated:

โ€œI can say it without hyperbole: it was the best experience of my career. Christopher pushes you beyond your limits, but he does it with such a clear vision that you trust him completely.โ€

Damon, 54, brings to the screen a mature Odysseus, scarred by war and exile, but still capable of cunning and courage. His physique has been trained for months for action scenes, and he has learned to row and maneuver ancient vessels with the help of maritime advisers.

Tom Holland is Telemachus

Tom Holland, known around the world for the role of Spider-Man In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he plays. Telemachus, the son of Odysseus who grew up without a father.

Telemachus is a pivotal character in the Odyssey: as Odysseus fights monsters and gods to return home, his son desperately seeks him out, growing from boy to man in the process. Holland, 28, has the perfect characteristics for the role: young, dynamic, able to convey vulnerability and determination.

Holland's casting is also strategic: his appeal among young people (thanks to Spider-Man and Uncharted) guarantees the film a wider audience than the traditional target audience for Nolan's films.

Fun fact: Holland and Damon bear a striking physical resemblance, making the on-screen father-son relationship believable.

Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Charlize Theron: The Female Roles.

Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, Odysseus' faithful wife who for twenty years resisted the Proci (the suitors who wanted to marry her and take the throne of Ithaca).

This is the third collaboration between Hathaway and Nolan, after The Dark Knight - The Return (2012) e Interstellar (2014). The Oscar-winning actress brings her ability to play complex characters: Penelope is not just โ€œthe expectant wife,โ€ but a political and strategic queen, able to fool the Proci for years with his intelligence.

Zendaya, 28, most likely plays Calypso, the nymph who holds Odysseus captive on the island of Ogygia for seven years, offering him immortality in exchange for her love. Calypso is one of the most ambiguous characters in the Odyssey: is she kidnapper or lover? Victim or antagonist? Zendaya, fresh from the triumphs of Dune e Challengers, has the stage presence and emotional intensity to do justice to this complex role.

Charlize Theron, Oscar winner and one of Hollywood's most versatile actresses, plays probably Circe, the sorceress who turns Ulysses' companions into pigs and then becomes his lover for a year. Theron has already demonstrated (in Mad Max: Fury Road e Atomic Blonde) of being able to play powerful, ambiguous and magnetic characters.

Robert Pattinson and Supporting Cast.

Robert Pattinson, who has previously worked with Nolan in Tenet (2020), plays Antinous, the leader of the Procians. Antinous is the main antagonist of the second part of the Odyssey: arrogant, violent, determined to marry Penelope and kill Telemachus.

Other cast names include:

  • Lupita Nyong'o (Oscar winner for 12 years a slave): unconfirmed role, perhaps a goddess or queen
  • Jon Bernthal (The Punisher, The Walking Dead): possibly the Cyclops Polyphemus
  • Mia Goth (X, Pearl): Melantho, Penelope's unfaithful servant
  • John Leguizamo: Eumeo, the swineherd loyal to Ulysses
  • Elliot Page: probably : probably Ermes, the messenger god
  • Benny Safdie, Samantha Morton, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Josh Stewart: secondary roles not confirmed

The Odyssey: Budget, IMAX Technology and Technical Innovations.

The Odyssey is not only an ambitious film because of the story it tells, but also because of how it was made. Nolan pushed the boundaries of film technology, creating the first film in history shot entirely in 70mm IMAX.

250 Million Dollars: Nolan's Most Expensive Film.

With a estimated budget of $250 million, The Odyssey is the most expensive film of Christopher Nolan's career, on par with The Dark Knight - The Return (2012).

For comparison:

  • Oppenheimer (2023): $100 million
  • Tenet (2020): $205 million
  • Interstellar (2014): $165 million
  • Inception (2010): $160 million

Where did this 250 million go?

โœ“ Stellar cast: salaries of Matt Damon, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and others
โœ“ Location shooting: filming in Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Malta, Western Sahara
โœ“ Practical effects: scenic ships, costumes, props, sets
โœ“ IMAX Technology: new chambers, 70mm film (over 2 million feet = ~$3 million film only), specialized laboratories
โœ“ Logistics: crew transportation, accommodation, catering for 91 days of filming

Nolan is known to prefer practical effects (real, physical) versus digital (CGI) effects. This means building real ships, shooting on the open sea, using real explosives. It is more expensive, but the result on the screen is incomparable.

First Film Shot Entirely in IMAX 70mm

The Odyssey is the first film in the history of cinema Shot at 100% with 70mm IMAX cameras.

Nolan has been a pioneer of IMAX since The Dark Knight (2008), where he used IMAX cameras for the first time in a narrative film (for the opening bank robbery scene). Since then, he has gradually increased the percentage of IMAX in each film:

  • The Dark Knight (2008): ~28% IMAX
  • The Dark Knight - The Return (2012): ~72% IMAX
  • Interstellar (2014): ~72% IMAX
  • Dunkirk (2017): ~75% IMAX
  • Tenet (2020): ~75% IMAX
  • Oppenheimer (2023): ~80% IMAX (first film to use IMAX 65mm in black and white)
  • The Odyssey (2026): 100% IMAX ๐Ÿ†

The IMAX 70mm format offers:

โœ“ 10 times higher resolution to digital 4K
โœ“ Dynamic range (contrast between light and shadow) incomparable
โœ“ Colors more saturated and natural (film has a โ€œtextureโ€ that digital cannot replicate)
โœ“ Immersiveness: IMAX projections fill the viewer's field of vision

But shooting entirely in IMAX was, until The Odyssey, technically impossible. Why?

The โ€œBlimpโ€ Revolution: How Nolan Solved the Audio Problem.

IMAX rooms are notoriously noisy. The mechanism that slides the film (70mm is huge compared to traditional 35mm) produces a constant, loud humming sound that makes it impossible to record dialogue.

Therefore, until Oppenheimer, Nolan used IMAX only for:

  • Action scenes (where room noise is covered by explosions, music, etc.).
  • Scenes without dialogue (landscapes, visual sequences)

For dialogue, he had to switch to traditional (quieter) 35mm or 65mm cameras.

But for The Odyssey, Nolan wanted to. all in IMAX. So he challenged the IMAX Corporation to solve the problem.

The solution: the โ€œBlimpโ€

A blimp is a soundproof enclosure that wraps around the chamber, dramatically reducing noise. IMAX has developed a custom blimp for its 70mm cameras, allowing for the first time:

โ€œTurn 30 centimeters from an actor's face while whispering, and get usable audio.โ€
- Christopher Nolan, Empire Magazine

The cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (Nolan's longtime collaborator, Oscar winner for Oppenheimer) tested the new system by filming a child reciting the lyrics of the song โ€œSound and Visionโ€ by David Bowie. The result, projected on an IMAX screen, was described by Nolan as. โ€œelectrifyingโ€.

Impressive numbers:

  • 2 million feet Of used 70mm film (610 kilometers!)
  • 91 days shooting
  • Film cost: ~$3 million (at $1.50 per foot, according to Kodak)
  • Workshops: only a few in the world can process IMAX 70mm

How to Explore the Locations of The Odyssey by Kayak

You've read about the history of filming, the cast, the locations. Now the question is: How can you experience these locations firsthand?

The answer is simple: in a kayak, navigating the same waters where Christopher Nolan shot his film.

Cala Rotonda Is one of our main stops. Here we stop for:

  • Snorkeling in the crystal clear waters
  • Relaxation break On the rocks or in a kayak
  • Photos With a view of the bay where they filmed The Odyssey

Preveto Island, the islet reachable only by sea, is the other key stop. Here we explore:

  • Le hidden coves around the islet
  • I rich backdrops Of colorful fish and posidonia
  • Le sea caves accessible only by kayak

In addition to Rotonda and Preveto, the route includes (depending on sea and wind conditions):

  • Cala del Passo: small bay nestled between cliffs
  • Caves and ravines: rock formations sculpted by the sea
  • Long Peak: boarding point

Why Kayaking is the Best Way to Visit Locations

You might ask: Why kayak, and not a boat or a walking tour?

1. Exclusive access
Many of the film's locations (Round Cove, Preveto, caves) are inaccessible from the ground or require trekking on dangerous trails. Tourist boats, on the other hand, cannot get too close to the coast because of maritime regulations.

The kayak is the only middle ground: you get as close as you want, safely.

2. Silence and immersion
On boat trips, you are surrounded by noisy engines, other boats, loudspeakers. In kayaking, the only sound is the paddle entering the water. You can actually listen to the sea, smell the saltiness, see the fish under the transparent surface.

It is the most authentic way to explore Favignana, away from mass tourism.

3. Active experience
You are not a passive passenger: you are the one rowing, setting the pace, interacting with the environment. Is it tiring? A little, but it is also incredibly rewarding. And at the end of the tour, in addition to the memories, you also have the satisfaction of having โ€œconqueredโ€ the coast by your own efforts.

4. Small groups
Our excursions have a maximum of 8 participants. This means:

  • Personalized attention from the guide
  • Ability to ask questions and ask for breaks
  • No hurry, no crowd
  • Ability to adapt the course to the level of the group

When The Odyssey Comes Out and Where to See It

After months of waiting, the time will finally come to see The Odyssey On the big screen.

Release Date: July 17, 2026

The Odyssey will be released in cinemas worldwide on July 17, 2026.

The date chosen by Universal Pictures follows the tradition of Christopher Nolan's films, which tend to be released in the summer (Dunkirk, Tenet, Oppenheimer) to maximize box office during the vacations.

July 2026 will be an important month for cinema: The Odyssey will likely compete with other summer blockbusters, but Nolan's name and stellar cast guarantee a record-breaking box office opening.

Early projections:

According to some rumors, a 6-minute prologue of The Odyssey could be premiered along with Avatar: Fire and Ash by James Cameron (scheduled for December 2025). It would be a brilliant marketing move, allowing millions of viewers to get a taste of the film months before its official release.

IMAX Worldwide Distribution

The Odyssey will be released simultaneously in IMAX 70mm, Digital IMAX, and traditional formats.

But the real experience will be in the 70mm IMAX salt (the only ones that can project the film in the original format). Unfortunately, there are only about 30 IMAX 70mm theaters worldwide, of which 2-3 in Italy (usually Milan and Rome).

For those who cannot get to a 70mm IMAX room, theโ€™Digital IMAX will still be a great alternative, with giant screens and immersive audio.

Where to see The Odyssey in Italy:

  • IMAX Milan: Likely location (historically has screened all of Nolan's films in IMAX)
  • IMAX Rome: Other likely location
  • Traditional cinemas: Throughout Italy, but the experience will be reduced

Council: If you want to live The Odyssey as Nolan envisioned it, look for an IMAX room. The difference is abysmal.

Expectations and Anticipations

Expectations for The Odyssey are very high:

โœ“ Box office: Analysts predict a U.S. opening of $150-200 million in the first weekend, with a global total that could exceed $1 billion (as Oppenheimer)
โœ“ Oscar 2027: The Odyssey will definitely be in the running for Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, Visual Effects, and probably Lead Actor (Matt Damon)
โœ“ Cultural impact: Like all Nolan films, we expect memes, analysis, theories, and a lasting impact on pop culture

Trailer and first images:

As of now (December 2025), no official trailer has been released. Universal Pictures has released only:

  • Poster teaser with the silhouette of Odysseus and a ship
  • First official photos from Empire Magazine (Nov. 2025), featuring Matt Damon in costume and scenes from the cast

The first trailer is expected to spring 2026 (March-April), probably during the NBA playoffs or before another Universal blockbuster.

Conclusion: Navigate Where Hollywood Met the Myth.

The Odyssey by Christopher Nolan is not just a movie. It is a cultural event that has transformed Favignana into a symbol of the encounter between contemporary cinema e ancient mythology.

For eight weeks, this small Sicilian island became the center of the film world, with Hollywood bowing to the wild beauty of the Egadi Islands. Cala Rotonda, Preveto, the Castle, the Tonnara: places that for centuries have welcomed fishermen and travelers, now immortalized on IMAX screens around the planet.

But beyond the fascination of cinema, there is a deeper truth: Favignana has always been part of the Odyssey. Not only because Samuel Butler theorized it in the 19th century, but because this island embodies the very spirit of Ulysses' voyage. Its jagged coastlines, mysterious caves, crystal-clear waters hiding rich depths-these are the same landscapes Homer described three thousand years ago.

Today, while the film is in post-production and the world awaits its release on July 17, 2026, Favignana has returned to its quiet. But for those who visit it with fresh eyes, Every wave, every reef, every ray of sunlight on the water tells a story.

Do you want to be part of this story?

Don't just watch the movie in the theater. Come to Favignana. Get in a kayak. Paddle toward Cala Rotonda. Stop at Preveto. Dive into the same waters where Matt Damon played Ulysses. Listen to the silence that only the sea can give.

My family and I went on a half-day kayaking trip. The scenery was incredible. We were guided to small, wild beaches unlike any I had ever seen before. We were beginners, but they took excellent care of us. Don't even worry about the food, because they offered us a delicious dinner. It was a fantastic trip to see the island from the sea!

It was our first kayaking tour. Mauritzo showed us wonderful places (coves, islands) and beaches) in Favignana, which we wouldn't have reached without this tour. Every single place was incredibly beautiful. It was worth seeing the snorkeling spots as well; the water was crystal clear. At the end, there was a delicious meal together. The tour was worth it, and Mauritzio is a wonderful teacher with a lot of humor and passion: thanks for this fantastic experience! I can highly recommend the tour. We had a fantastic kayaking tour in Favignana with Maurizio! He is an incredibly friendly and charming guide who took us through the tour with great passion. In fact, for him the kayaking season in Favignana had already ended, but for us he made an exception. Maurizio not only showed us wonderful places that we would never have discovered without his local knowledge, but he also told us many interesting stories and basic information. It shows that he really puts his heart and soul into it. The tour was perfectly organized, very relaxing, and at the same time full of highlights. He organized the local snacks himself and we ate together. We can only highly recommend a kayaking tour with Maurizio and we will be happy to return! Thank you for this unforgettable experience!

A wonderful opportunity to explore the island of Favignana in a less mainstream way. We visited small rocks and coves that are hardly accessible from the land and are less frequented by the crowds of tourists. Accompanied by the stories and the friendliness of Maurizio, who made this alternative approach to exploration a true way of life, we were able to fully appreciate the beauty of the island. An unforgettable experience and highly recommended.

The view was truly incredible, the activities along the route were very fun, and also, feeling that you can go from one place to another with your abilities was such a beautiful and unparalleled experience. The instructor was fantastic. The long time in the kayak was a challenge for me, but it made it so easy to tackle the journey. I want to come back soon and try another route. Thank you very much!

I chose to do the kayaking experience in Favignana to have the opportunity to visit the island without visiting the classic and consequently overcrowded areas. Maurizio gave me the opportunity to enjoy views of the water and the indescribable rocks. The turquoise color of the sea, the fish, and the contact with nature that the kayak offers make you feel excited and leave indelible memories. For an entire day, you escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and stop to admire the incredible things nature has to offer. Maurizio was very kind and helpful, even offering a ride from the port to the starting point of the excursion. I had the opportunity to hear his authentic story and it is definitely something that I will carry in my heart and that makes me think a lot. Thanks Maurizio and good wind!
Today, my husband Davide and my daughter Giorgia had the pleasure of participating in a kayaking trip with Maurizio. It was an unforgettable experience and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a unique adventure in the middle of nature. From the very beginning, Maurizio proved to be an exceptional guide. His friendliness and friendly approach made the entire day enjoyable and relaxing. Maurizio is not only an expert kayaker, but also an inexhaustible source of knowledge about the area. During the excursion, he provided us with many fascinating insights into the landscape and the surrounding nature, allowing us to fully appreciate the beauty and history of the place. Every corner we visited was more stunning than the previous one, and the experience of seeing these natural wonders by kayak was truly special. Even my daughter, who initially was a bit reluctant to participate, was won over by the beauty of the places and the pleasant atmosphere created by Maurizio. Another highlight of the day was the lunch break. We were delighted by the excellent homemade bread, accompanied by fresh fruit and Sicilian sweets, which added a touch of authenticity and flavor to our excursion. It was the perfect moment to relax, chat, and enjoy the company. In short, we highly recommend this kayaking excursion to everyone, even those who might initially feel a bit lazy or uncertain. Thanks to Maurizio's expert and passionate guidance, we were able to have a day full of discovery and fun. It is an experience we will remember for a long time and we hope to be able to repeat it soon!

5 stars are not enough to give a rating for this experience, which is simply extraordinary! Maurizio took us into his world and, with his professionalism and experience, he managed to make us fully enjoy everything the island had to offer: beauty, variety, and taste. I return home with a deeper awareness: happiness comes from simple things, from the sea, from nature, and from sharing. An unforgettable adventure!
