About Us: The History of Egadi Kayak

Egadi Kayak is an Amateur Sports Association established to promote the practice of sea kayaking and knowledge of the natural environment of the Egadi Islands. It is the result of 35+ years of passion for the sea, skills acquired over time, and the decision to share the beauty (and safety) of Favignana with those who come to visit.

We are Maurizio and Federica, a couple who have turned a lifetime of marine experiences into a mission: to guide every visitor through the waters of Favignana in total safety, with respect for the environment and professional competence.

Our Mission

Our mission is to introduce Favignana from a different, slow and silent perspective, supporting the culture of conscious tourism. We believe that kayaking is an ideal tool for experiencing the sea safely, appreciating the area and learning to move in respect of the marine environment.

Each of our activities is created with the aim of educating, passing on skills and enhancing the natural environment of the Egadi Islands. Our activity is dedicated to spreading a healthy lifestyle, teaching kayaking and discovering the sea in a sustainable and respectful way.

Maurizio Cancemi: 35 Years of Marine Experience

I am 52 years old and the sea has been my life. When I was 16 I started diving as a scuba diver, and since then I have never stopped exploring the waters around Favignana and beyond.

My marine experience is built on:

Diving (36 years of experience)
- Multiple diving patents - I am a certified expert diver with experience in recreational diving
Underwater knowledge: I know every underwater cave, every current, every biological point of interest around Favignana
Underwater safety: Years of practice have taught me how to recognize and manage the hazards of the sea

Multiple Water Sports (35 years)
- Windsurfer - Practicing since age 17, I know the winds of Favignana like few others
- Kitesurfer - Certified as a kitesurfing instructor (I.K.O.).
- Sailor & Skipper - Sailing and motor boat license, I have been sailing independently for dozens of years

Safety and Rescue (20+ years)
- Lifeguard License -I have worked as a professional lifeguard and taught in lifesaving schools
- BLSD License (Basic Life Support & Defibrillation) - Certificate for first aid intervention and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- Swimming Instructor Certificate - I taught swimming in formal schools, to understand how people move in the water

Sea Kayak and Italian Canoe and Kayak Federation (15 years)
- FICK (Italian Kayak and Canoe Federation) Instructor - This is the official Italian certification. I teach paddling techniques, safety at sea, and emergency management

Other nature-based sports
- Pilot's license for ultralight aircraft - Skilled hang glider

The combination of these skills is not accidental. Each certification, each year of experience, has taught me something different about marine safety. When I lead a tour, I'm not just paddling-I'm applying 35 years of knowledge about the sea and the elements of nature.

Federica Giubilato: Partner, Companion, Guide

Federica is my wife. For the past 15 years, she has shared every sea kayak-related adventure with me, accruing 15 years of practical sea kayaking experience in Favignana, and a genuine passion for the safety of our students.

Federica has something no patent can teach: 15 years of daily practice, sharing passion, and dedication to safety. When you're with us, kayaking is not a tourist activity-it's part of a story of people living the sea every day.

Our Activities

Egadi Kayak organizes meetings, educational outings, beginner's courses, introductory activities to the sport, and guided kayak tours to acquaint people with the basics of paddling, safety at sea, and the characteristics of sea kayaking. The outings are part of the association's institutional purposes, geared toward sports and environmental outreach.

We conduct outings, educational activities and guided tours designed to introduce anyone to kayaking, even those without experience. Activities are conducted in small groups to ensure focus, safety and a direct relationship with participants. Each route is chosen taking into account sea conditions and participants' abilities.

Our Philosophy

We work following the principles of slow tourism, sustainability and respect for the environment. The coasts of Favignana are a unique natural heritage, and kayaking is one of the best means of approaching the sea without disturbing the ecosystem. We believe in an educational approach, based on observation, listening and appreciation of the island's less frequented places.

Safety is our first job. I have taught lifesaving, CPR, swimming and kitesurfing. I have learned, in each context, that safety is not an addition-it is the foundation.

This is not a tour operator's standard. It is the standard of two people who have devoted decades to marine safety.

We are not casual guides. We live in Favignana. We work in the sea every day. I know every change of season, every current, every strange thing that happens in the water.

This is not “brochure” experience. It is living, daily, constantly updated experience.

Safety and Equipment

We provide sit-in sea kayaks, paddles, approved vests, and all the equipment needed for association activities. Before each outing we conduct a short introductory time devoted to technique, posture and safety so that everyone can participate in peace of mind.
